The 1940s era photograph becomes part of the museum's permanent collection. Fred Korematsu was a US citizen of Japanese ancestry who was imprisoned for defying a relocation order. Seventy years after the United States detained citizens of Japanese ancestry, the gallery that honors noteworthy Americans on Thursday dedicated a portrait of the man who defied the order.
