Levenwick on the East Coast South Shetland Isle Mainland SCO 7531Levenwick is a very scenic small village about 17 miles south of Lerwick, on the east side of the south Mainland of Shetland. It is part of the parish of Dunrossness. The village is actually made up of several smaller settlements which include: North Punds, Gord, Netherton, Upperton, Stonybrake, and South Punds. The Levenwick Health Centre provides medical support for the Dunrossness area, and the Overtonlea Residential Unit provides residential care for the elderly of the south Mainland. In the literature of the isles, it is associated with George Stewart, author of the pioneering Shetland Fireside Tales, who lived here in his youth. Today Levenwick is home to a number of artists, including Amy Moncrieff, Anne Bain and James Bruce Thomason. Just down the coast from (Sandwick in Shetland) is Levenwick, another fabulous broch site. As with Burraland the site is a spectacular ruin, unmediated by modern excavation, interpretation or management plan. Though romantic this is rather confusing for the uninitiated, with many key features obscured by collapsed rubble and later modifications, including a number of stock control pens from the crofting era. The site itself is enclosed by a low rampart, probably with its entrance on the north side. Between the broch and rampart on the west side a confused tangle of curvilinear buildings blocks any obvious route to the brochs entrance, so the visitor would have turned to the left and progressed clockwise round the broch to its doorway.
