Gay Pride MarchAny discussion on human sexuality has been a taboo in India for long. If sexuality per se is a taboo, the fate of homosexuality has been worse. Vatsayana's Kamasutra spends an enitre chapter discussing homosexual intercourse, though. Yet, homosexuality has never been accepted as a normal sexual orientation in a tradition-bound Indian society. Homosexuality has long been considered a deviant, if not a delinquent behavior. However, the law of the land criminalises such act as being against the order of nature. Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code provides for 10 years' imprisonment for "unnatural sex". It actually applies to anyone who could be accused of having had "carnal intercourse against the order of nature" and the "unnatural offence" has further been interpreted to include anal and oral sex.
