Chinas population turning to electric bicycles for transportation

--FILE-- Local residents walk past electric scooters parking by the roadside in Changsha, central Chinas Hunan province, April 5, 2009. China, a place considered the bicycle kingdom, is going electric. Many workers that pedal long distances to work or are stuck on crammed public transportation are upgrading to battery-powered bikes and scooters. People who can afford cars are even switching to the electric two-wheelers in order to avoid more congestion on the road and the high expense of gasoline. Most of the large population cannot afford cars and the electric bicycles give them more options in terms of commuting. The sales of electric bikes last year soared from under 200 thousand to almost 22 million. ( automatický překlad do češtiny  ) ( zobrazit originální popisek v angličtině )
