China - Uyghurs of XinjiangA naked Uyghur boy plays in the old city of Kashgar, Xinjiang province, China on Aug. 11, 2003. The area is earmarked for development by the Chinese government in order make way for new apartment buildings and shop fronts. Local Uyghurs will not be able to pay for housing in the new apartments, and transmigrant Chinese from central and eastern parts of the country will move in. The Uyghurs are furious. Those who lived in the areas were compensated with the lowest rates possible, approx. $12/sq. m, and cannot afford to buy another house. Those who still have houses are angry that the government is destroying a 500-year-old city that holds much of the rich Uyghur history.
