Chile celebrates as 33 trapped miners are found alive and well

August 24, 2010, Copiapo, Atacama, Chile: After 18 days of searching, rescue teams located 33 Chilean miners alive and well on August 23, after a mine collapsed in the Atacama Desert 17 days earlier. Though the miners are together and alive, they are trapped below a half-mile of rock in a 600 square foot safety chamber. Temperatures are placed at 90 degrees and air circulation is limited to small streams from the poor ventilation system. Estimates put rescue time at four months.
