Can shorts rival these graceful frocks for the courts?

A fashion illustration underlining the great tennis fashion debate of 1932 - Can shorts rival elegants skirts and dresses on the tennis court? It goes on to describe how Mrs Helen Wills Moody and other leading players have denounced the idea of shorts for lawn tennis and upheld the simple white frock with a pleated skirt. The Sketch expected there to be 'no likelihood of "shorts" appearing in any important tournament' and that 'nothing is smarter or more practical than a well-tailored frock such as those sketched here." All dresses are of Japshan pure silk, which washes and wear splendidly, worn with little short jackets in Viyella. The American tennis champion Alice Marble pioneered the wearing of shorts, and, despite the prophecies of The Sketch magazine here, women tennis players frequently were wearing shorts by the end of the 1930s.
