Boys run backyard bike fix shopJanuary 20, 2012, Greensboro, North Carolina, USA: January 20, 2012 - Greensboro, North Carolina: Kenneth Pedley, 13, scavenges parts. Bike fixing buddies, Kenneth Pedley, 13, Stephen Bartley, Kenneth's brother, 13; Joshua Cox, 12; Kerron Smith, 11, and Tymier Starks, 11, work on a bicycle for Tymier in their backyard fix-it shop. Between Watkins and Cranbrook streets, bordered by backyard fences near the railroads and old Pomona Cotton Mill, five boys are busy in their backyard fix-it shop for bicycles. They've all played ball together, known each other and seen each other in classrooms at Hunter Elementary and Jackson Middle schools. But on this particular day, their task is getting a bike ready for their 11-year-old buddy, Tymier Starks. And he needs one fast. Tymier's buddies have the tools: pliers, an adjustable wrench and a 3/8-inch ratchet with a single 9/16-inch socket. And they have most of the parts: 13 discarded bikes the boys rescued from their streets right after Christmas. So, inside a mound of bike frames, they scavenge for anything they can find. They already had bought bike parts for $5. The boys lose their tools, then find them again in a circle of leaf piles. They don't get distracted by the rumbling of a train that lumbers not even 200 feet from their workshop. They don't notice. After digging through parts, 13-year-old Kenneth Pedley and his bike-fixing buddies Ń Stephen Bartley, Kenneth's brother, 13; Joshua Cox, 12; Kerron Smith, 11 find what they need: a BMX Freestyle bike for their friend. It has no brake pads, no wheels and a loose seat. It's painted a shade of pink that Barbie would be sure to like. As for the seat, it spins around and around. It desperately needs a clamp. During the boys' search for the right combination of bike and tires, they realize they need an inner tube. So, they do what they always do: Pump up two inner tubes and choose which one leaks the least. Just old-fashioned ingenuity. After nearly three hours, Tymier's bike is ready. The boys take turns test-riding the new bike, and they can't help but giggle at how odd their creation looks. Still, Tymier beams. The boys' biggest discovery on this day is not made of steel or found discarded in front of a neighbor's home. They realize they have something that is bolted tight: their friendship. "We are like brothers,'' Kenneth said. ( automatický překlad do češtiny ) ( zobrazit originální popisek v angličtině ) | ||
